Abstract

Objectives


Our objective is to perform drug utilization study of various drugs in a tertiary care corporate hospital.


Methodology


Itwas a prospective observational study conducted in various departments of Sunshine Hospitals for a period of 6 months. A total of 300 prescriptions were included in the study and were followed for the drug use evaluation. This study included both male and female in-patients of age above 18 years.


Results


In our study, we have observed that 50.16% of drugs have ATC/DDD values. The ratio of PDD=DDD, PDD<DDD and PDD>DDD was found to be 24:81:46 respectively. Male: Female ratio was 6: 4. The majority of the patients (24.33%) were in the age group of 58-67 years. The age group with least number of patients is 88-97 years (0.33%).The majority of patients were in gastroenterology (14.33%) and neurology (14.33%) departments. A total of 63 patients (21%) were found to be associated with social habits. Majority of them had both cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption habit (46.03%). Majority of patients are found to be suffering from hypertension (31.89%) followed by Type II diabetes mellitus (22.63%).


Conclusion


The majority of the patient were males. Geriatrics comprised the majority of the patients in our study duration. All the drugs prescribed were in safe doses. More awareness is required on the concept of prescribing drugs by generic names. Polypharmacy is seen in certain patients due to age, advanced disease, multiple co-morbidities etc.
